Check Engine Light Tips

1. The Check Engine light tells you the computer found a problem with your vehicle's running condition.

2. If the vehicle is drving OK, a Check Engine light is not a reason to pull over. But get the problem fixed soon.

3. In testing areas, you will fail your emissions test if the Check Engine light is on.

4. Fuel economy generally suffers when the Check Engine light is on.

5. An extended warranty covers emissions-related components that can trigger the Check Engine light. More information is at: epa.gov/obd/warranties.htm.

6. When the Check Engine light is on, one or more "trouble code(s)" are stored in the computer.

7. You can read and erase trouble codes using inexpensive code-reader tools from auto-parts stores; the tools are very easy to use.

8. The problems identified by the codes are frequently easy to fix (such as a loose gas cap), but some are complex, requiring professional diagnosis.

9. A trouble code indicates a circuit where the problem was identified, not necessarily the faulty component. Diagnosis is often necessary.

10. The Haynes OBD-II Techbook (Book #10206) is your source for late-model code information. If you have a 1995 or earlier model, get Book #10205. Both books can be found in the Techbook section of this site.

About Us

Haynes Manuals…Save Money. Do It Yourself. Feel Good.

The worldwide leader in automotive and motorcycle repair, maintenance and customizing manuals with sales of well over 7 million manuals annually and over 150 million total sold globally, Haynes Manuals are a must read for all car owners. Haynes Manuals are the ultimate DIY guide books for used, collector, and newer vehicles. As one of the most widely read automotive books in the world, Haynes Manuals covers the motoring industry from Acura to Volvo, from BMW to Yamaha.

What sets Haynes Manuals apart is the attention to detail that goes into the production of each book. Every manual is written from hands-on experience based on a complete teardown, which is the step-by-step procedure of dismantling a particular vehicle part-by-part. This is followed by the detailed rebuilding of the specific model it documents. Writing each manual takes 30 man-weeks, with authors working as teams to shorten the production time and avoid fatigue during the difficult process. Hundreds of photographs accompany each manual’s step-by-step instructions. The books are written from the actual experience of Haynes’ own expert personnel using only a basic set of tools and presented in a style that any DIYer can follow, even a beginner. The DIYer can save a great deal of time and money, not to mention feeling proud of the job, by using a Haynes book.

John Haynes OBE wrote and published his first book, on building an Austin 7 Special, while he was still at school in 1956. He wrote two more ‘Special builders’ manuals while doing his National Service in the RAF. The first ‘proper’ Haynes Manual, for the Austin Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite, was published in 1965. Based on the teardown and rebuild of the project vehicle and with extensive use of step-by-step photographs--a process that has not changed to this day--this manual set the standard for many generations of manuals to follow.

Haynes Publishing was founded in 1960. The main office is located in Somerset, England and a US office is just outside of Los Angeles, CA. Printing is done in Somerset, England and in Nashville, TN.

As a result of having completed over 2,000 teardowns, Haynes offers close to 500 manuals in the U.S. There is an extensive selection of auto repair books, written in both English and Spanish, and nearly 200 motorcycle and ATV repair books. Haynes manuals can be found in all better auto parts retail stores.
