This Haynes Audi A4 manual covers models first introduced to the UK in February 1995. Mechanically there is a fundamental similarity to the VW Passat, but with the engines fitted ‘in-line’ instead of transverse. Saloon and Estate (Avant) models are available, equipped with a variety of engine sizes. This Audi A4 manual covers the 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engine models, including both normally-aspirated and turbocharged versions. The smallest engine is the petrol 1600 SOHC, and in addition there are 1781 cc DOHC petrol engines. All diesel engines are SOHC turbocharged.
A five-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard to all models.
A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available within the model range to suit most tastes, including an anti-lock braking system and air conditioning.
For the home mechanic, the Audi A4 is quite straightforward to maintain, and most of the items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible.
