  • time 5 minutes
  • difficulty 2
Locate the battery
Check the Negative (-) terminal clamp is tight
Check the Positive (+) terminal clamp is tight. CAUTION If using a spanner to tighten the terminal, be careful not to short the spanner on the bodywork
Check the battery is generally secure, and if loose, tighten the battery retainer
To tighten, a 10mm socket is needed. Not too tight as you may damage the battery casing. If you have to replace the battery or alternator, click below

Battery removal & replacement

Battery removal

1 The battery is located on the left-hand side of the engine compartment, on a platform above the transmission.
2 Loosen the clamp nut, then detach the earth lead from the battery negative (earth) terminal post (see illustration) . This is the terminal to disconnect before working on, or disconnecting, any electrical component on the car. Position the lead away from the battery.
Loosen the clamp nut (arrowed) and disconnect the battery negative lead
3 Pivot up the plastic cover (where fitted) from the positive terminal, then loosen the positive lead clamp nut (see illustration) . Detach the positive lead from the terminal, and position it away from the battery.
Loosen the clamp nut (arrowed) and disconnect the battery positive lead
4 Undo the two nuts securing the battery top clamp plate, and lift it off (see illustration) . On certain models, one or two vacuum hoses may be clipped to the clamp plate – if so, detach them before removal.
Undo the two nuts securing the battery top clamp plate, and lift it off
5 Lift out the battery, keeping it as level as possible. Take care, as the battery is heavy.

Battery refitting

6 Refitting is a reversal of removal. Reconnect the battery negative lead last. Make sure the battery terminals and clamps are clean before refitting, and that the clamp nuts are tightened securely.

Battery tray removal

7 If required, once the battery has been removed, the battery tray and its support bracket can also be removed, as follows.
8 On all except 1.4 litre diesel engine models, remove the air cleaner assembly as follows:

Petrol models

9 Pull the collar away from the air cleaner assembly, and disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the air cleaner (see illustration) .

10 On 1.6 litre engines, disconnect the airflow sensor wiring plug, located in the outlet from the air cleaner cover (see illustration) .
Prise up the red locking catch and disconnect the wiring plug
11 Slacken the retaining clip and disconnect the air outlet duct from the throttle housing (see illustration) .

12 Depress the retaining tab and detach the air inlet duct from the front body panel (see illustration) .
Depress the retaining tab and detach the air inlet duct from the front body panel
13 Pull the air cleaner upwards to remove it (see illustration) . The pegs on the base of the cleaner fit into rubber grommets. These pegs may prove troublesome to release, and some effort may be needed.

1.6 litre diesel engines

14 Disengage the retaining clip tabs and disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the oil separator (see illustration) .

All models

19 Undo the two bolts and remove the cover over the front of the powertrain control module (PCM) mounted on the side of the battery tray.
20 The battery tray is secured by three bolts at the base. Undo the bolts, and lift the battery tray off its support bracket (see illustration) .
Undo the three bolts (arrowed) and lift the battery tray off its support bracket
21 Undo the bolt at the top and the two bolts on the underside and separate the PCM mounting bracket from the battery tray (see illustrations) . Remove the battery tray from the engine compartment.

Alternator replacement

1 Disconnect the battery negative terminal.

Petrol engines

2 Remove the auxiliary drivebelt.

Diesel engines

8 The alternator is located on the left-hand rear of the engine. First, remove the auxiliary drivebelt.

Refitting

15 Refitting is a reversal of removal, noting the following points:
  1. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque, including those for the air conditioning compressor, where applicable.
  2. Ensure that the wiring is reconnected correctly, and that the retaining nuts are tight.
  3. Refit the auxiliary drivebelt.
3 Prise up the plastic cap and disconnect the alternator battery cable, then disconnect the field wiring multiplug behind it (see illustrations) . Note the fitted positions and routing of the wiring.

4 Undo and remove the alternator upper mounting nut (see illustration) .

5 Undo the alternator lower mounting bolt (see illustration) .
. . . and lower mounting bolt
6 Undo the alternator upper mounting bolt, then unscrew the alternator upper mounting stud. This can be done using two nuts locked together on the stud’s threads and unscrewing using the inner nut, or pull the alternator forwards a little and use a pair of self-grip pliers to unscrew the stud. Support the alternator as the stud is removed, then lift the alternator from place.

Refitting

7 Refitting is a reversal of removal. Remembering to tighten the alternator mounting bolts/nuts to 45 Nm (33 Ibf ft).
9 On the 1.6 litre diesel engine, carry out the following:
  1. Loosen the retaining clips and disconnect the intercooler-to-inlet manifold air hose from the throttle housing and intercooler.
  2. Loosen the retaining clips and disconnect the intercooler-to-turbocharger hose from the intercooler and turbocharger outlet pipe.
10 Unbolt and remove the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner.
11 Prise up the plastic cap and disconnect the alternator battery cable, then disconnect the field wiring multiplug next to it (see illustration) . Note the fitted positions and routing of the wiring.
Prise out the cover, then disconnect the alternator wiring and plug
12 Where applicable, disconnect the wiring plug from the air conditioning compressor, then remove the four mounting bolts and tie the compressor to one side, without disturbing any of the hose connections.
13 Remove the alternator left-hand mounting bolts (see illustration) .
