Do not change a wheel in a situation where you risk being hit by other traffic. On busy roads, try to stop in a lay-by or a gateway. Be wary of passing traffic while changing the wheel – it is easy to become distracted by the job in hand.
Changing the wheel
The jack and wheel brace are stored in the luggage compartment. Remove the moulded cover (where fitted), then unscrew the retaining bolt and remove the jack and wheel brace. Detach the wheel brace from the jack.
The spare wheel is in a cradle under the rear of the vehicle. Pull up the cover in the luggage compartment for access to the cradle securing screw. Using the wheel brace, loosen the screw by 6 to 8 turns then unhook the spare wheel cradle from the securing bracket under the back of the vehicle, and lower the cradle until it is resting on the floor.
On models where the wheel nuts are not visible, use the blade end of the wheel brace to prise off the wheel trim. Using the wheel brace, loosen each wheel nut by half a turn. Where a locking wheel nut is fitted, it will be necessary to use the special adapter supplied in the tool kit to remove the nut.
Locate the jack head below the reinforced jacking point nearest the wheel to be changed. Ensure that the lug on the jack head engages with the cut-out in the jacking point, and that the foot of the jack is on firm ground.
Turn the jack handle clockwise until the wheel is raised clear of the ground. At this stage, slide the spare wheel under the vehicle next to the jack as a precaution if it fails.
Unscrew the wheel nuts, noting which way round they fit (tapered side inwards), and remove the wheel. Remove the spare wheel from under the car and position the removed wheel in its place.
Locate the spare wheel on the studs and tighten the nuts moderately with the wheel brace. Lower the vehicle to the ground, and then securely tighten the wheel nuts progressively in diagonal sequence.
