Front-wheel drive vehicles

1 The air filter element is located in the air cleaner assembly situated on top of the engine camshaft cover.
2 Release the two spring clips and detach the air outlet duct from the air cleaner cover (see illustrations) .

3 On later engines, disconnect the wiring connector from the mass airflow sensor located on the air cleaner cover.
4 Release the four spring clips securing the air cleaner cover to the air cleaner housing (see illustration) .

5 Lift up the air cleaner cover at the front, disengage the three retaining tabs at the rear and remove the cover (see illustration) .

6 Lift out the element, noting its direction of fitting, and wipe out the housing (see illustration) .

7 If carrying out a routine service, the element must be renewed regardless of its apparent condition.
8 If you are checking the element for any other reason, inspect its lower surface; if it is oily or very dirty, renew the element. If it is only moderately dusty, it can be re-used by blowing it clean with compressed air.
9 Fit the new element using a reversal of the removal procedure.

Rear-wheel drive vehicles

10 The air filter element is located in the air cleaner assembly situated on the right-hand side of the engine compartment.
11 Disconnect the wiring connector from the mass airflow sensor located on the air cleaner cover (see illustration) .

12 Release the hose clip securing the air outlet duct to the air cleaner cover (see illustration) . Note that the hose clip may not be of the screw type, and will have to be separated by prising the crimped section with a small screwdriver. The clip can be re-used if care is taken, but it may be preferable to fit a screw-drive clip when refitting.

14 Detach the air outlet duct from the air cleaner cover, then lift the cover up at the front, disengage it at the rear and manipulate it out from the engine compartment (see illustration) .

15 Lift out the element, noting its direction of fitting, and wipe out the housing (see illustration) .

16 Remove any debris, and wipe clean the inside of the air cleaner housing.
17 Fit the new element using a reversal of the removal procedure.
