Disconnect the battery negative lead.
In order to remove the alternator, the air conditioning compressor must be removed as follows:
Have the refrigerant discharged at a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning repair facility.
Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands. Remove the radiator lower splash guard. Remove the engine undertray (where fitted).
Drain the coolant.
Release the clips and disconnect the radiator upper hose, to provide access to the alternator upper mounting bolt.
Remove the main auxiliary drivebelt.
Unscrew the bolt and disconnect the union block from the compressor. Discard the O-ring seals, and obtain new ones for the refitting procedure. Tape over or plug the compressor apertures and line ends, to prevent entry of dust and dirt.
Support the air conditioning compressor, then unscrew the mounting bolts. Lower the compressor from the engine .
Keep the compressor level during handling and storage
. Disconnect the compressor wiring plug as it's lowered from place.
Unplug the wiring connector from the rear of the alternator, then undo the nut to disconnect the wiring terminal from the alternator
Disconnect the wiring from the rear of the alternator
Undo the alternator upper retaining bolt and unclip the wiring harness support bracket (where fitted)
Remove the alternator upper mounting bolts…
Remove the lower mounting bolt and lower the alternator from place
…and the lower mounting bolt
Slacken the right-hand front roadwheel, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on axle stands. Remove the roadwheel and the engine undershield (where fitted)
Engine undershield fasteners
Undo the fasteners and remove the right-hand front wheelarch liner.
Loosen the nut securing the steering track rod end to the hub carrier steering arm. Do not remove the nut at this stage as it will protect the balljoint threads. If necessary, use an Allen key to hold the balljoint shaft while loosening the nut
Slacken the trackrod end balljoint retaining nut
Using a balljoint separator tool, release the balljoint from the steering arm
. If the balljoint is to be re-used, take care not to damage the dust cover when using the separator tool. Fully unscrew the nut and disconnect the track rod end from the arm. If necessary, use a 5 mm Allen key to hold the balljoint stationary while the nut is loosened. Discard the nut as a new one must be used on refitting.
Use a separator tool to release the trackrod end balljoint from the hub carrier
Unscrew the nut and disconnect the anti-roll bar link from the strut. If necessary, use a 5 mm Allen key to hold the spindle while the nut is loosened.
Remove the auxiliary drivebelt. Note there is no need to remove the tensioner or completely remove the belt – with the tension released, disengage the belt from the alternator pulley.
Disconnect the wiring plugs from the rear of the alternator
Disconnect the wiring plug, then undo the nut and disconnect the lead
Unscrew the lower mounting studs using a Torx socket, then manoeuvre the alternator through the right-hand wheelarch aperture
Manoeuvre the alternator through the right-hand wheelarch aperture
If you are renewing the alternator, take the old one with you. Make sure that the new or rebuilt unit is identical to the old alternator. Look at the terminals – they should be the same in number, size and location as the terminals on the old alternator. Finally, look at the identification markings – they will be stamped in the housing, or printed on a tag or plaque affixed to the housing. Make sure that these numbers are the same on both alternators and the pulleys are identical.
Refitting is the reverse of the removal procedure, referring where necessary to the relevant Chapters of this manual. Tighten all nuts and bolts to the specified torque wrench settings.
