Do not change a wheel in a situation where you risk being hit by another vehicle. On busy roads, try to stop in a lay-by or a gateway. Be wary of passing traffic while changing the wheel – it is easy to become distracted by the job in hand.
As the handbrake acts on the transmission, it is essential that the wheels are chocked securely.
Changing the wheel
The spare wheel is bolted to the tailgate. The tools are stored in the tailgate storage pocket.
The jack is located in the front of the engine compartment, adjacent to the battery. Remove the jack.
Place the chocks behind and in front of the wheel diagonally opposite to the one to be removed.
Remove the cover from the spare wheel (where applicable), then use the wheelbrace to unscrew the spare wheel retaining nuts, and remove the spare wheel. Note that where alloy wheels are fitted, use the locking nut adapter in the tool bag to unscrew the nut.
Assemble the jack handle, then use the slotted end to close the valve on the jack by turning it fully clockwise.
Pulling by hand or using a screwdriver, remove any wheel trim/hub cap (as applicable) then, using the wheelbrace from the tool kit, slacken each wheel nut by a half turn. If anti-theft wheel nuts are fitted, pull the cover from the nut using the tool provided, then slacken them using the adapter supplied in the tool kit.
1 Position the jack under the front or rear jacking point as appropriate. The jacking points are indicated by a notch in the front or rear suspension links. As the jack is raised, the head must enter the notched recess in the jacking point.
Make sure the jack is located on firm ground then insert the handle, and operate the jack until the wheel is raised clear of the ground. Unscrew the wheel nuts and remove the wheel. Fit the spare wheel and screw on the wheel nuts. Lightly tighten the nuts with the wheel brace then slowly rotate the jack valve anti-clockwise and lower the vehicle to the ground.
Securely tighten the wheel nuts then refit the wheel trim/hub cap (as applicable). Stow the punctured wheel and tools, and secure them. Note that the wheel nuts should be slackened and retightened to the correct torque (140 Nm) at the earliest possible opportunity.
