Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2000 - 2007  | C160 - 1.8 Kompressor Battery check

Locate the battery
Open the battery cover / pollen filter housing) Undo the three clips
Check the Negative (-) terminal clamp is tight
Open the 'Positive' (+) protective cover
Check the Positive (+) terminal clamp is tight. CAUTION - if using a spanner to tighten terminal, be careful not to short it on the bodywork
Check battery is generally secure, if loose, tighten the battery retainer

To tighten, a 13mm socket is needed. Not too tight because you may damage the battery casing
Replace battery cover / pollen filter. If you have to replace the battery or alternator, click below

Battery removal & replacement

Removal

1 The battery is located in the left-hand rear corner of the engine compartment. Open the bonnet, release the retaining clips and remove the pollen filter intake housing from above the battery (see illustration) .

2 Loosen the clamp bolt and disconnect the battery negative cable from the terminal (see illustration) .
Disconnect the earth lead
3 Loosen the clamp bolt and disconnect the battery positive cable from the terminal.
4 Unscrew the bolt and remove the clamp plate securing the battery to the inner wing panel (see illustration) .

5 Lift the battery out from the engine compartment.

Refitting

6 Refitting is a reversal of removal. Tighten the battery clamp plate bolt securely.

Alternator replacement

Removal

1 The alternator is bolted to the right-hand side of the engine block and is driven by the auxiliary belt.
2 Disconnect the battery negative (earth) lead.
3 Apply the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Remove the engine compartment undershield.
4 Detach the auxiliary drivebelt from the alternator pulley.

111 type petrol engines

5 At the front of the air filter housing, rotate the air inlet pipe collar anti-clockwise, and then disconnect it from the air filter housing.
6 Where applicable, disconnect the wiring connector from the Mass Air Flow/Inlet Air Temperature (MAF/IAT) sensor.
7 Slacken the hose clip and disconnect the inlet hose from the right-hand side of the air cleaner housing.
8 Undo the retaining bolt on the left-hand side front of the air cleaner housing and lift the air cleaner housing out from the engine compartment.

271 type petrol engines

9 Remove the air inlet pipe from the front of the air cleaner housing (see illustration) .
Remove the air intake pipe
10 Release the locking clips and disconnect the wiring connectors from the ECU attached to the air filter housing (see illustration) .
Disconnect the ECU wiring connectors
11 Disconnect the wiring connector from the mass airflow (MAF) sensor at the rear of the air filter housing (see illustration) .
Disconnect the MAF sensor wiring connector
12 Disconnect the wiring connector from the altitude sensor on the side of the air filter housing (see illustration) .
Disconnect the altitude sensor wiring connector
13 Remove the cable ties from the mounting brackets and move the wiring loom to one side (see illustration) .
Release the wiring harness
14 Disconnect the breather hose from the air filter housing, and undo the two retaining bolts at the rear of the housing (see illustration) .

15 Slide the air filter housing to the rear to disengage the locating pegs, and then remove it from the engine compartment (see illustration) .

611 and 612 diesel engines

16 Remove the air filter element.
17 Slacken the hose clip and detach the ducting from the front of the air cleaner housing and the breather pipe from the camshaft cover (see illustration) .
Disconnect the breather hose
18 Undo the retaining bolts from inside the lower part of the housing and then unclip the upper part of the housing from the camshaft cover (see illustrations) . Remove the lower housing from the engine compartment. As the housing is removed, recover the washers from the mounting bolts.

. . . unclip the rubber clips . . .
. . . and remove the housing

646 engines

19 Remove the air filter element.
20 Slacken the hose clip and detach the ducting from the front of the air cleaner housing (see illustration) .
Disconnect the air intake pipe
21 Disconnect the wiring connectors from the mass airflow (MAF) sensor and pressure sensor on the front of the air filter housing.
22 Pull the air cleaner housing upwards and then forward to release it from the rear rubber mounting (see illustrations) .
Lift out the housing . . .
. . . and disconnect it from the rear mounting

Petrol engines

23 To make access easier, unbolt the power steering pump/reservoir from the cylinder head and move it to one side (see illustration) .

24 Unscrew and remove first the lower mounting bolts, and then the upper mounting bolts. Withdraw the alternator forwards to access the wiring connectors on the rear of the alternator (see illustration) .

Diesel engines

25 Undo the retaining bolts and remove the heat shield from above the exhaust manifold (see illustration) .

26 Undo the mounting bracket bolts and remove the air intake pipe from turbocharger (see illustrations) .
Undo the retaining bolts . . .
. . . and remove the air charge elbow
27 Unscrew and remove the mounting bolts, and remove the turbocharger support bracket (see illustration) .
Unbolt the support bracket
28 Unscrew and remove the two lower mounting bolts, and then the two upper mounting bolts (see illustration) .

29 Withdraw the alternator forwards to access the wiring connectors on the rear of the alternator (see illustration) .
Remove the alternator

All engines

30 Prise off the protective cap and unscrew the nut securing the battery positive lead to the alternator terminal (see illustration) . Position the lead to one side.
Remove plastic cap . . .
31 Release the locking clip and disconnect the wiring connector from the alternator terminal (see illustration) .
. . . and disconnect the wiring connectors

Refitting

32 Refitting is a reversal of removal. Reif the auxiliary drivebelt. Tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 42 Nm (31 Ibf ft).
