Vauxhall Astra 1998 - 2004  | 1.6 16v Air filter change

1 The air cleaner is located in the front right-hand corner of the engine compartment.

1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines

2 Release the securing clips, or undo the retaining screws (as applicable) and lift the air cleaner cover sufficiently to enable removal of the filter element (see illustrations) . Take care not to strain the wiring for the airflow meter/intake air temperature sensor wiring (as applicable) as the cover is lifted.
Release the retaining clips . . .
. . . and remove the filter element – 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines
3 Lift out the filter element.
4 Wipe out the air cleaner housing and the cover. Fit the new filter, noting that the rubber locating flange should be uppermost, and secure the cover with the clips or screws.

2.2 litre engines

5 Release the fuel vapour hose support clips from the lugs on the side of the air cleaner cover, and release the hose from the clip at the rear of the cover (see illustrations) .

6 Slacken the retaining clip securing the air inlet trunking to the air cleaner cover (see illustration) .

7 Release the securing clips, or undo the retaining screws (as applicable) securing the air cleaner cover to the housing (see illustration) .

8 Lift the cover off the air cleaner housing and detach it from the inlet trunking (see illustration) .

9 Lift out the filter element then wipe out the housing and the cover (see illustration) . Fit the new filter, noting that the rubber locating flange should be uppermost

10 Refit the cover to the inlet trunking and air cleaner housing and secure the cover with the securing clips or screws. Tighten the inlet trunking retaining clip and resecure the fuel vapour hose.
