Engine oil level

1 Modern engines place great demands on their oil. It is very important that the correct oil for your car is used.

9 Add a mixture of water and VW G12 Plus antifreeze to the expansion tank until the coolant level is halfway between the level marks. Refit the cap and tighten it securely. Note: Some antifreeze is supplied pre-mixed (‘ready to use’), and that no more water should be added to it.

Car care

Note: If the oil is checked immediately after driving the vehicle, some of the oil will remain in the upper engine components, resulting in an inaccurate reading on the dipstick.
2 The dipstick is often brightly coloured for easy identification.
Withdraw the dipstick, and then use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe the oil from it. Insert the clean dipstick into the tube as far as it will go, then withdraw it again.
4 Note the level on the end of the dipstick. It is satisfactory for the level to be anywhere in the dotted area. The notches on the dipstick represent the absolute MAX and MIN marks. There are different dipsticks used, depending on engine.
5 Oil is added through the filler cap aperture. Unscrew the cap.
6 Top-up the oil level, using a funnel may help to reduce spillages. Place some cloth rags around the filler cap aperture if required. Add the oil slowly, checking the level on the dipstick frequently. Avoid overfilling (see Car care). Should you need to renew the oil and filter, click below

Coolant level

Warning: Do not attempt to remove the expansion tank pressure cap when the engine is hot, as there is a very great risk of scalding. Do not leave open containers of coolant about, as it is poisonous.

Car care

7 The coolant level varies with the temperature of the engine. When the engine is cold, the coolant level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
8 If topping-up is necessary, wait until the engine is cold. Slowly unscrew the cap to release any pressure present in the cooling system, and remove the cap.

Brake (and clutch) fluid level

Note: On manual transmission models, the fluid reservoir also supplies the clutch master cylinder with fluid

Before you start

Warning: Brake fluid can harm your eyes and damage painted surfaces, so use extreme caution when handling and pouring it. Do not use fluid that has been standing open for some time, as it absorbs moisture from the air, which can cause a dangerous loss of braking effectiveness.
10 The MIN and MAX marks are indicated on the reservoir. The fluid level must be kept between the marks at all times.
11 Note that the level will drop naturally as the brake pad linings wear, but must never be allowed to fall below the MIN mark.
12 If topping-up is necessary, first wipe clean the area around the filler cap to prevent dirt entering the hydraulic system. Unscrew and remove the reservoir cap.
13 Carefully add fluid, taking care not to spill it onto the surrounding components. Use only the specified fluid (DOT 4); mixing different types can cause damage to the system. On completion, securely refit the cap and wipe away any spilt fluid.

Washer fluid level

Warning: On no account use engine coolant antifreeze in the screen washer system – this may damage the paintwork.
14 The screen wash fluid reservoir is located on the right-hand side of the engine compartment, behind the headlight.
15 Pull up the filler cap to release it from the reservoir.
16 When topping-up the reservoir, a screen wash additive should be added in the quantities recommended on the bottle.

Wiper blade replacement

1 Check the condition of the wiper blades: if they are cracked or show signs of deterioration, or if the glass swept area is smeared, renew them. For maximum clarity of vision, wiper blades should be renewed annually.
2 To remove a windscreen wiper blade, turn the ignition on, then turn the ignition off, and press the wiper switch stalk down once. This places the arms in the ‘service’ position. Lift the wiper from the screen and press the securing clip …
3 … slide the blade upwards from the end of the wiper arm, taking care not to allow the wiper arm to spring back and damage the windscreen. When completed, return the blades to the park position by pressing the wiper switch stalk again.
4 To remove the rear wiper blade, press the securing clip (arrowed), and remove as described for the front wiper blades.
