  • time 10 to 30 minutes
  • difficulty 1
Warning: Do not change a wheel in a situation where you risk being hit by other traffic. On busy roads, try to stop in a lay-by or a gateway. Be wary of passing traffic while changing the wheel – it is easy to become distracted by the job in hand.
On XC60 models the spare (if fitted) is located beneath the luggage area floor cover. Lift out the tool tray followed by the spare wheel. Place the wheel under the sill as a precaution against the jack failing. Note that the spare may be of the ‘space saver’ type.
On XC90 models the spare wheel is located beneath the vehicle. Lift up the luggage area cover, remove the jack and use the jack winding handle to lower the spare wheel.
Where fitted, pull the wheel trim from the wheel. Before you raise the car, loosen each wheel bolt by half a turn only. On models with alloy wheels, use the special adapter.
Locate the jack head in the reinforced jacking point, nearest the wheel to be changed (XC90 shown). Turn the handle until the base of the jack touches the ground then make sure that the base is located directly below the sill. Raise the vehicle until the wheel is clear of the ground.
If the tyre is flat make sure that the vehicle is raised sufficiently to allow the spare wheel to be fitted. Remove the bolts and lift the wheel from the vehicle. Place it beneath the sill in place of the spare as a precaution against the jack failing.
Fit the spare wheel, then insert each of the wheel bolts and tighten them moderately using the wheelbrace.
Lower the vehicle to the ground, then finally tighten the wheel bolts in a diagonal sequence. Note that the wheel bolts should be tightened to 140 Nm (103 Ibf ft) at the earliest opportunity.
Some models do not have a spare wheel fitted. On these models a small compressor and bottle of sealant are provided .Full instructions are provided on the lid of the compressor. Note that sealant will not repair large cuts or damage to the sidewall of the tyre.
Warning: You should not exceed 50 mph when driving the vehicle with a space saver spare wheel fitted – consult your vehicle handbook for further information.
