Buyer’s guide: the VW Golf story

The Golf Mk7 is available in three body styles: 3 door hatchback, 5 door hatchback and an estate version. A convertible model (based on the Mk6 Golf) is also available, but is not covered by this manual. All versions are based on the modular 'MQB' Volkswagen group platform that forms the basis for several models within the Volkswagen Group.

Models are available with a range of petrol or diesel engines. Petrol engines range in size from 1.0 litres to 2.0 litres, but note that only the popular 1.2 litre, 1.4 and 2.0 litre petrol engines are covered by this manual. Diesel engines range in size from 1.6 litre to 2.0 litre. These are all 'Common Rail' (CR) engines. On CR engines the injectors are supplied with high-pressure fuel from a reservoir (the 'common rail'). All the engines are of a well-proven design and, provided regular maintenance is carried out, are unlikely to give trouble.

Fully independent front suspension is fitted, with a classic MacPherson strut layout, complete with an anti-roll bar on all models. All of the front suspension components (apart from the struts) are attached to a subframe assembly. The rear suspension uses trailing arms together with multi-link transverse arms on higher-powered models (those with an output of greater than 90 Kw), while lower-powered models (up to 89 Kw) have a simpler torsion beam axle fitted.

A five or six-speed manual gearbox is fitted, with a six or seven-speed 'DSG' (Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe) semi-automatic transmission also available.

A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available within the model range to suit most tastes, including air conditioning (with manual or fully automatic climate control).
