About

The heart of all Harleys, the key to what makes a motorcycle a Harley-Davidson, is the engine. The rest of the bike exists to keep the engine off the pavement. This function is performed in grand style, of course, with a near-infinite selection of customizing possibilities, but at the center of it all is a big-displacement, narrow-angle, uneven-firing, air-cooled V-twin that roars instead of wails.
The engine covered in this Harley Davidson Big Twins manual is a large capacity, 45-degree V-twin, mounted inline with the frame. In this manual, the early engine (through 1984) with cast-iron heads and cylinders is referred to as the Shovelhead engine, while the later engine (1985-on) with aluminum heads and cylinders, is called the Evolution engine. Actually, the Evolution engine was first installed in 1984 FXST models and the Shovelhead engine was used in all other 1984 models, so there was some overlap of engine types and model years.
