Buyer’s guide: the Ford Fiesta Mk5 story

The Ford Fiesta model range covered by the Haynes manual was introduced into the UK in April 2002, superseding the previous Fiesta range. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to the acclaimed Focus, the new Fiesta represented the first all-new small car from Ford since the 1989 Mk 3 (interim Fiesta models having been substantial facelifts only). The new long-wheelbase design provided greatly improved interior space, while the Intelligent Protection System offered high levels of passenger safety.

As before, 3-door and 5-door hatchback models were available, along with a 3-door Van. The Fusion, which arrived in September 2002, was really a Fiesta-based mini-MPV, identical in many respects to the car it was based on. A range of Duratec petrol engines were offered, from a 1.3 litre 8-valve to 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 litre twin-cam 16-valve units, all based on proven designs. The old 1.8 litre diesel engine was replaced with a new 1.4 litre Duratorq TDCi, co-developed with Peugeot, and featuring state-of-the-art common-rail injection. All engines were mounted transversely at the front of the car.

All models have front-wheel-drive, with a five-speed transmission. New for this Fiesta was the optional Durashift EST automated gearshift system, giving a new kind of automatic operation – ‘clutchless’ electronic gearchanging, but using near-conventional clutch and gearbox major components. The front suspension is of conventional MacPherson strut-type, incorporating lower arms and an anti-roll bar; at the rear, a semi-independent beam axle is combined with compact under-floor springs to provide a more spacious load area.

All Fiestas feature driver’s and passenger’s airbags, central locking, CD radio and power steering – anti-lock brakes, electric windows and air conditioning are among the options available higher up the range.
