Toyota Yaris (1999 - 2005)

The Toyota Yaris was introduced in March 1999. Complementing its small yet spacious body were small-capacity (1.0- and 1.3-litre) engines which managed to offer the performance of larger units. There were 3- and 5-door hatchback versions offered, as well as a 5-door estate, called Verso. The Yaris offered good passenger safety, with an impact-absorbing bodyshell and highly-rigid cabin, driver’s airbag and seatbelt tensioners. The range received a facelift in May 2003, with minor revisions to the headlights, bumpers and interior trim, as well as some safety-related improvements. The Yaris had plenty of equipment, even at the lower end of the model range, including a driver’s airbag, anti-lock brakes, trip computer, engine immobiliser, adjustable rear seat, radio/cassette and power steering. Air-conditioning was fitted higher up the range. For the home mechanic, the Yaris is a straightforward car, since most of the items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible.
