The Volvo S80 saloon was introduced in 1999, then the V70 estate appeared in 2000. The petrol engines were all fuel-injected, in-line, five-cylinder units of 1984cc, 2319cc, 2401cc, 2435cc or 2521cc. Two diesel engines were available, although we cover only the later direct-injection common-rail 2400cc and 2401cc turbocharged unit. Transmissions were either 5- or 6-speed manual, or 5- or 6-speed automatic with computer control. As with all Volvo models, safety features were of paramount importance, and the Supplemental Restraint System and Side Impact Protection System offered an exceptional level of driver and passenger protection for the time.
