Ford Explorer 1991 - 2001  | 4.0 V6 SOHC Air filter change

1 Purchase a new filter element
2a Disconnect the PCV hose from the air outlet tube, then disconnect the air outlet tube from the air cleaner cover
2b Disconnect the electrical connector from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
2c Label and disconnect the vacuum lines at the rear of the cover, remove the cover retaining screws and slide the cover sideways out of the retaining tab slots
3 Remove the cover retaining screws. Disengage the cover tabs from the slots
4 Lift the cover off and take the element out of the housing
5a If necessary, squeeze the hot air hose retainers and push the hose out of the housing . . .
5b . . . then remove the mounting screw and lift out the housing
6 Place the new air filter element in the housing. If the element is marked TOP be sure the marked side faces up
7 Reinstall the cover and retaining screws. Don’t overtighten the screws
8 Reconnect the vacuum hoses, air outlet tube and electrical connector
9a Release the clamps (arrows) on the air filter housing - 4.0L SOHC V6 shown
9b On the 5.0L V8, release the single round clamp (arrow) on the air cleaner housing
10 Pull the air filter out of the housing. Wipe the housing out with a damp rag and install the new filter element
11 Assembly is the reverse of the removal procedure
