FAQs About Auto Repair Manuals

All Manuals

What is a “complete teardown and rebuild”?

From the very beginning, Haynes realized the best way to understand a vehicle and write accurate, comprehensive repair procedures was to bring the vehicle into our workshop and actually take it apart – the way you would at home. To do this, we have purchased and disassembled countless vehicles – more than one for every book published. This process allows us to verify the procedures we put into the manual and provide the reader with hundreds of photographs. With mechanics and authors working together on each project, we discover new, simpler methods and work-arounds to avoid you having to use special tools. While the number of parts removed varies from project to project, the teardown is always to the extent necessary to provide an array of photographs and to develop the new methods required for the manual.

Do you produce or sell owner's manuals?

Unfortunately this isn't included in our product range.

Where do I go to find a Haynes manual for my vehicle?

We've made it easy to search for a manual for your specific vehicle on the Haynes website. There are various ways you can proceed to find your vehicle:

1. You will find a Vehicle Search area (Find your manual) on the top part of most site pages where you can simply enter your vehicle "Year", the "Make" and "Model" to find out if we have a specific print and/or online manual book for your needs.

2. Using the top navigation selections, you will find category tabs most with drop-down selections for "Automotive Manuals", "Motorcycle Manuals", etc. You can start there and proceed to find your Make and Model.

3. You can enter your vehicle specifics into the search box. For example, “2005 Ford Explorer”.

Why can't I find a manual for my vehicle?

There are two possible reasons:

1/ It's too new.
2/ The model range did not have enough vehicles produced.

We typically do not produce manuals for vehicles less than two years old. And we don't consider creating a manual until there are enough vehicles on the road for us to cover the time and costs of developing one of our comprehensive manuals (which includes a complete teardown and rebuild of the vehicle and the time/costs to author and print the manual). There are thousands of year/make/model combinations of vehicles out there with new ones being introduced all the time. It would take an army of qualified technicians and writers to cover such quantities. We have to be a bit more selective.

What is a techbook and how is it different from a manual?

The Haynes Techbook series provides an in-depth look at focused areas of vehicle repair that may span multiple years/makes/models, while our Haynes Repair Manuals series is year/make/model specific. Like the Haynes Repair Manuals series, each Techbook offers easy-to-follow text plus hundreds of hands-on photos to help you do the job right!

You can view all the available online Techbooks via the links below and more will be added on an ongoing basis:

Is all the equipment on my vehicle covered in the manual?

In most manuals, Haynes covers all popular sub-models, engine options and equipment installations. For example, a manual on a Ford Mustang would cover six-cylinder and V8 models, the GT sub-model, manual and automatic transmission and accessories such as ABS and air conditioning. However, sub-models with very limited production, such as an SVT Cobra, may not be included. Any exclusions will be specifically listed in the manual description.

Does the manual cover the task I will be doing?

Haynes covers procedures a typical do-it-yourselfer is likely to perform at home, such as maintenance, tune-up and removal/installation of components. When special equipment and knowledge is required, such as with a wheel alignment or a transmission overhaul, the procedure may not be included.

Here is a list of procedures that are generally covered in all Haynes automotive repair manuals. Some procedures may not apply to your vehicle if the component listed is not installed:

How long does it take to produce a Haynes manual?

From the time a vehicle arrives in our workshop to the time the manual is available is about 6 months. Writing a manual takes a team of technical authors roughly 3 months working with our Haynes certified mechanics during the vehicle teardown and rebuild process. This is followed by the manual production and proofing process and finally printing prior to distribution to retail locations in the U.S. and globally.

Why does the Contents table send me to the wrong page?

All Haynes repair manuals have numbered Sections within each Chapter. The Contents refers to these Section numbers, NOT the page numbers. So Section 5 might be on Page 3.

What are Ft-lbs. and In-lbs. in the torque tables?

When it is necessary to specify a torque value for a particular fastener, Haynes will provide it in either foot-pounds (ft-lbs.) or inch-pounds (in-lbs.). One foot-pound of torque is equivalent to 12 inch-pounds of torque. Torque values below approximately 15 ft-lbs. are expressed in inch-pounds, since most foot-pound torque wrenches are not accurate at these smaller values.

Online Manuals

Do you publish your manuals in electronic format?

Yes, Haynes also offers online/digital manuals! Online Manuals are an electronic version of our iconic printed Haynes Repair Manual. Haynes has converted hundreds of our most popular Automotive, Motorcycle, Scooter and ATV manuals to electronic format. These are available from www.haynes.com and select versions are also available for purchase at leading auto parts retailers. Just search for your specific vehicle and both Print and Online Manual options will appear, if we have that manual in both formats. Haynes will continue to add further online manual titles as the conversion process continues. Haynes traditional printed product line will continue to be marketed aggressively with an ongoing program of updates and new titles as well. Many customers are choosing the best of both formats and purchasing a print and online manual together!

Haynes Online Manuals are accessed via the internet and remain available as a "lifetime subscription" meaning the for the life of the manual for no less than 3-years. For those that are currently have an active 1-year subscription for an online manual, you will be given the opportunity to upgrade your current subscription to the "lifetime subscription" for the same price of renewing your 1-year subscription for another year.

There is no limit to printing out pages from our online manuals. Unlimited pages can be printed at home, so you don't have to risk your expensive IT equipment in the workshop.

Are there advantages to purchasing Online Manuals?

Yes, the online/digital format does provide a number of advantages.

1/ All the same great content as the print manual, only better!
2/ You can use the online manual on many devices such as a laptop, tablet or even a smartphone.

To learn about the system requirements for Haynes online manuals and for troubleshooting steps (including how to ask for help from Haynes), please see below.

Minimum system requirements:

PC:

  • Windows XP or higher
  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 2 gigabytes (GB) of RAM
  • A high-speed internet connection (recommended minimum of 2000 kb/s). Note that dial-up connections are not supported, and satellite connections are frequently a source of problems, as connection speeds can vary
  • Video playback may require additional memory and advanced graphics hardware

Mac: 10.4 (Tiger) or later

iPad: All models

Android: Gingerbread 2.3.3 and all later Android versions

Browser requirements:

Haynes Online Manuals' information system is designed to be displayed on popular browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari). Our system is periodically updated for best user experience, and you may find that older versions of these browsers do not function optimally. As an initial troubleshooting step, we suggest you update to the latest version of your browser.

Troubleshooting:

Problems accessing the system

Haynes Online Manuals' data and operating software are located entirely on our servers. Nothing is ever copied to your computer’s hard drive. This allows us to continually update data and software, making it easy for you to access your manual from any computer or mobile device. This also prevents any problems related to outdated or corrupted files on your computer or other device. If you are experiencing problems accessing the system, please follow the steps below:

  • Make sure the username (email address) and password you are using are the same as what you selected at the time of registration. Sometimes users change their email address and don’t realize that their previous email address needs to be used as their username.
  • Attempt to access your manual from another computer or device that meets minimum system requirements. If you cannot access your manual online from either computer/device, check access and speed on other websites that use large files, such as high-resolution photos and videos. If you can access these sites but not the Manuals Online site, the Manuals Online site may be down momentarily. Try accessing again in about 15 minutes. If you still cannot achieve access, send an email to customerservice.haynes@infopro-digital.com, following the instructions under Customer Service below.

If you are able to access the system from one computer or device, but not another, check the following items on the computer experiencing difficulties. One of these is almost certainly the problem:

  1. Pop-up blockers will prevent access to the system and can also prevent the display of wiring diagrams and high-resolution photos. Generally, this is an option within your browser settings. Additionally, anti-virus and online security programs can prevent access. As a test, disable these programs and see if you can now access the system and view images
  2. You may have spyware/malware infecting your computer and using system resources, including internet bandwidth, without your knowledge. Generally, one scanner is not adequate to detect all possible infections. This is particularly true with PC’s
  3. A download may be occurring in the background, and you are unaware of it as it draws away your bandwidth
  4. A Windows or Mac dialog box is sitting open and unanswered in the computer background, stalling your computer CPU while it awaits your yes/no input
  5. Your browser memory cache is excessively full. Look for “Options” or “Internet Options” in your browser’s settings and search for the option that allows you to clear your cache
  6. Mobile devices (tablet, smart phone, etc.) sometimes experience problems due to outdated browsers or insufficient connection speed. Try accessing your online manual from a computer with a high-speed connection. If this provides sufficient speed, check with your wireless provider and/or device manufacturer to seek a solution.
  7. Your internet bandwidth is inadequate for the site. Even though you have met our minimum requirements based upon the speed advertised by your internet provider, you may not be achieving this speed, usually for one of the reasons listed below. You can check your actual speed quickly at one of the free online speed checking sites, such as dslreports.com.

Possible causes of a slow internet connection:

  •  If using a plug-in connection for your internet, the hardware connecting your computer to the modem/router may be malfunctioning.
  • Your modem/router may not be configured correctly.
  • Your bandwidth may be shared among other computers, resulting in slow speeds even though you meet minimum system requirements. Possibly, your neighbors could be accessing your wireless connection without your knowledge (can easily happen if you’re not using a password or your password is weak). You can verify your actual connection speed quickly through a free online speed checker, such as dslreports.com
  • For plug-in connections, your network interface card (NIC) may be older and not capable of high speeds (10/100 preferred, 10/1000 recommended).
  • Your ISP (internet service provider) may be having issues with routing signals to you
  • Radio or microwave devices in your home might be degrading your internet wireless signal.

If you are still unable to access your manual, email Customer Service, following the instructions below.
