The second-generation Mazda MX-6 appeared in 1991, and underneath it was the same as the car that would eventually become the second-generation Ford Probe. Both cars were built alongside each other. The Mazda MX-6 came in three trims. Base-level cars had a 118hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, while the two trims above that (Luxury and M-edition_ were available with a 164hp 2.5-liter V6. The car was subject to only minor revisions until its was taken off sale in 1997.
