Subaru is famous for making cars with the ‘flat’ boxer engine, with horizontally opposed pistons, and Symmetrical All Wheel Drive, but the firm started life building aircraft, many of which were used in World War II.
Subaru is owned by Fuji Heavy Industries, which concentrates on aircraft, industrial engines and trucks. Subaru itself has the mantra ‘Confidence in motion’ and spent much of the 1980s and ’90s competing in the world of rallying with the Legacy RS and Impreza - and had terrific success with Brits Colin McRae and Richard Burns at the wheel. Sadly, Subaru withdrew from the WRC in 2008 and while the company still sells a hot hatch, most of its range comprises sports utility vehicles, with the notable exception of the BRZ coupe, developed in association with Toyota.
