The Land Rover Freelander was launched in the UK in October 1997. It was available as a 3-door softback or hardback, as well as a 5-door hatchback, with a choice of 1.8-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel engines. The fashionably styled Freelander had high ground clearance, permanent four-wheel drive, power-assisted steering, and fully independent suspension, making it a capable off-road performer. In June 2000 and July 2003, the Freelander underwent ‘facelifts’ , and in 2001 the existing L-Series diesel engine was replaced by the TD4 2.0 litre diesel engine of BMW origin. An automatic transmission was also available for the first time.
