Ford Fiesta 2017-2023 common problems

Ford Fiesta 2017-23 front static

Talk about going out on a high. The Ford Fiesta Mk8 was a great swansong for a model that had been putting smiles on the faces of owners since 1976. It was popular, with more than 22 million sold around the world, but now that it’s been discontinued, numbers will start to dwindle. That’s why it makes sense to keep your Fiesta Mk8 in tip-top condition, which is where Haynes can offer a helping hand.

We’ve just published a brand new Haynes Manual dedicated to the Ford Fiesta Mk8, so can guide you through every job you can think of, from DIY servicing to bigger repair jobs. The manual has new QR codes throughout, which link to extra information and repair techniques, so you can keep on top of everyday maintenance, as well as repairing weak spots, like the ones below.

What recalls has the Ford Fiesta Mk8 been subject to?

The 2017-2023 Ford Fiesta has been subject to the odd recall, but no more so than other cars in its class.

These recalls have included a lower front balljoint nut that hadn’t been tightened correctly, and which needed to be tightened to the correct torque. Then 9,818 cars were recalled to have a damaged oil separator replaced.

Faulty seatbelt inertia reels forced the Fiesta back to dealers for another recall, so it’s worth making sure that all of these issues have been attended to by a dealer.

Does the Ford Fiesta Mk8 have bearing problems?

The Ford Fiesta Mk8 is similar to a number of other Ford models in that it generates a cracking noise from the front wheel bearings as you pull away in first gear or reverse.

The issue is that not enough sealant has been applied to the driveshaft splines, and to carry out the appropriate fix you’ll need to remove the driveshaft from the hub, clean it up, apply sealant and put it all back together. Sounds complicated, but it really isn’t, and our step-by-step procedure in the new Fiesta Mk8 Haynes Manual will guide through exactly what you need to do.

Ford Fiesta Mk8 gearlever

Does the Ford Fiesta Mk8 have gearbox problems?

Some owners have reported issues in which they are unable to select either reverse or first gear in their 2017-2023 Ford Fiesta.

This issue afflicts cars with the 5MX65 five-speed manual gearbox fitted.

Now, while internal gearbox repairs tend to be beyond the home mechanic, we can show you how to remove the transmission, so that it can be taken to a specialist for repair. Being able to remove and replace the transmission yourself will save you around £500 on the cost of the repair, because you won’t be shelling out your hard-earned cash on labour charges for someone else to do it for you.

Ford Fiesta horn

Is your Ford Fiesta Mk8 horn honking on its own?

Apparently, the Ford Fiesta Mk8 likes a bit of comedy. This is because it likes to embarrass its owners on occasion by honking its horn, seemingly at random.

The issue lies with the wiring for the horn in the steering wheel, and causes the horn to emit its usual noise when the steering wheel is turned. Not ideal when you’re in town. Or in a car park. Or on a twisty road. Or… anywhere really.

Still, the repair is well within the scope of the home mechanic, because all you need to do is remove the driver’s airbag, check the horn wiring for damage, and if it isn’t damaged, simply reroute it slightly, then refit everything.

The Haynes manual will show you all of the steps required to remove and refit the driver’s airbag safely, and will save you at least £200 on the cost of the job at a professional workshop.

Ford Fiesta Mk8 rear tracking

Is your Ford Fiesta Mk8 rattling?

No one likes a rattle in their car. It’s bad enough if it comes from a loose piece of trim in the cabin, but it’s a whole lot more worrying if the rattle comes from under the bonnet – where all the expensive bits lie.

And that’s what can happen in some versions of the Ford Fiesta Mk8 – mainly early cars with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine fitted.

The problem isn’t the engine though – thankfully. Instead, it’s caused when the engine vibrates at idle, and causes an earth cable to rattle against the air filter housing.

The fix is easy, and only requires the earth cable to be loosened and moved slightly away from the air filter housing. And this is something your Haynes manual can talk you through.
