Ford Focus Mk2 routine maintenance guide (2005 to 2011 petrol and diesel engines)

Ford Focus Mk2

Modern cars such as the Ford Focus Mk2 need much less maintenance than the vehicles of 25 years ago, but they still have needs. You no longer have to do a service every 6 months, or change the oil every 3 months, but regular fluid changes are still essential to your vehicle’s longevity.

What follows is our quick reference guide to many of the recommended routine maintenance tasks for the Ford Focus Mk2 (2005 to 2011 petrol engines), most of which you can do yourself at home.

If you need more guidance, take a look at this selection of videos from our 2005-2011 Ford Focus YouTube playlist.

Ford Focus Mk2 maintenance schedule

The Ford Focus Mk2 maintenance intervals shown below are provided with the assumption that you, not the dealer, will be carrying out the work. These are the minimum intervals recommended by us for vehicles driven daily.

If you wish to keep your vehicle in peak condition at all times, you may wish to perform some of these procedures more often. We encourage frequent maintenance, since it enhances the efficiency, performance and resale value of your vehicle.

If the vehicle is driven in dusty areas, used to tow a trailer, or driven frequently at slow speeds (idling in traffic) or on short journeys, more frequent maintenance intervals are recommended.

Ford Focus Mk2 service intervals

Every 250 miles

  • Check the engine oil level
  • Check the coolant level
  • Check the screenwash fluid level
  • Check the brake/clutch fluid level
  • Check the power steering fluid level
  • Check the tyres and tyre pressures
  • Check the condition of the battery
  • Check the condition of the wiper blades

Every 6,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first

  • Renew the engine oil and filter*

*Note: Ford recommend that the engine oil and filter are changed every 12,500 miles or 12 months. However, oil and filter changes are good for the engine and we recommend that the oil and filter are renewed more frequently, especially if the vehicle is used on a lot of short journeys.

Every 12,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first

In addition to the items listed above, carry out the following:

  • Check the condition of the auxiliary drivebelt
  • Check the operation of the lights and the horn
  • Check under the bonnet for fluid leaks and hose condition
  • Check the condition of the engine compartment wiring
  • Check the condition of the brake pads, shoes and discs
  • Check the exhaust system
  • Check the steering and suspension components for condition and security
  • Check the condition of the driveshaft joints and gaiters
  • Check the underbody and all fuel/brake lines
  • Lubricate all hinges and locks
  • Roadwheel nuts tightness check
  • Carry out a road test
  • Renew the pollen filter*
  • Check and if necessary adjust the handbrake
  • Check the condition of the seat belts
  • Check the antifreeze/inhibitor strength

* Note: If the vehicle is used in dusty conditions, the pollen filter should be renewed more frequently.

Every 37,500 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first

In addition to the items listed above, carry out the following:

  • Renew the air filter*
  • Renew the fuel filter (diesel models only)
  • Renew the spark plugs (petrol engines only)

* Note: If the vehicle is used in dusty conditions, the air filter should be renewed more frequently.

Every 60,000-62,500 miles

In addition to the items listed above, carry out the following:

  • Renew the timing belt and tensioner – 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol engines and all diesel engines

Note: The Ford interval for belt renewal is actually at a much higher mileage than this (100 000 miles or 8 years). It is strongly recommended, however, that the interval is reduced to 60,000-62,500 miles, particularly on vehicles which are subjected to intensive use, ie, mainly short journeys or a lot of stop-start driving. The actual belt renewal interval is therefore very much up to the individual owner, but bear in mind that severe engine damage will result if the belt breaks.

Every 75,000 miles (diesel models only)

  • Renew the exhaust particulate filter

Every 100,000 miles or 8 years, whichever comes first

  • Renew the auxiliary belt

Every 2 years, regardless of mileage

  • Check the automatic transmission fluid level
  • Check the manual transmission oil level
  • Renew the brake fluid
  • Renew remote control battery
  • Renew the coolant*

* Note: If Ford pink/red antifreeze is used, the coolant can then be left indefinitely, providing the strength of the mixture is checked every year. If any antifreeze other than Ford’s is to be used, the coolant must be renewed at regular intervals to provide an equivalent degree of protection; the conventional recommendation is to renew the coolant every two years.
