What's a B0011 fault code? Haynes tells all

fault code

Cars are ahead of the game these days, because they can let you know well in advance if something's starting to wrong. Not only does this allow you to get ahead of any developing issue, it also minimises the risk of you ending up stranded at the side of the road. How does it do this? Easy – through a warning light and a fault-code reader. Click here to see our test of the best fault-code readers you can buy.

Here, we explain what some of the most common fault codes mean.

B0011

This is a fault code that’s used to indicate an issue with the driver’s side airbag. Specifically, it means the airbag has shorted out somewhere along the circuit between the sensors and their control system. Depending on your vehicle and type of airbag system, this could be caused by something as simple as a loose connection or broken wire. In other cases, the airbag control module itself may need to be replaced.

What are the symptoms of the B0011 code?

When the B0011 code is present, the airbag warning light will be illuminated on your dashboard. This is usually accompanied by a chime or other sound to alert you that something is wrong. While this fault code itself won’t cause any immediate danger, it should still be addressed as soon as possible in order to ensure the safety of you and your passengers.

What causes the B0011 code?

As mentioned above, a loose connection or broken wire is the most likely cause of this code. Other possible causes include damaged or corroded wiring, faulty airbag control module, and even faulty sensors.

Can you drive with a B0011 code?

Yes, you'll be fine. However, it’s still a good idea to sort it as soon as possible because if you're unfortunate enough to have an accident, the airbag might not go off when you need it to.

How to diagnose a B0011 fault code

In order to diagnose this code, you’ll need to connect a diagnostic scan tool to your car and read the fault codes. Once you have identified the code as B0011, it should be relatively easy to identify the faulty part by inspecting all of the airbag components for signs of damage or wear. If everything looks okay, then check the wiring in the area for signs of damage or corrosion.

How to fix the B0011 code

Once you’ve identified the faulty part, it should be relatively easy to fix. If the issue is simply a loose connection or broken wire, then this can usually be fixed by tightening or replacing the wiring. If there are any other issues such as a damaged control module or faulty sensors, then these will need to be replaced in order for the system to work correctly.

Your vehicle's Haynes Manual will give you clear step-by-step instructions on how to go about replacing the faulty components.
