What recalls has the Ford C-Max Mk2 been subject to?

The C-Max Mk2 has been recalled a few times, some for serious issues, some for less serious frailties. More than 15,000 cars were recalled because the cylinder head could suffer a crack if it was subject to localised overheating. A more significant recall concerned more than 122,000 vehicles with 1.0-, 1.5- and 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engines, which could suffer a failure of the clutch pressure plate.

Almost 49,000 models fitted with the 2.0-litre diesel engine were recalled because overheating could cause the sump to crack.

What common problems does the Mk2 C-Max have?

Many versions of the C-Max have been known to suffer from loose sealing strips around the door frames, which can cause a high-pitched squeal at speed. In addition, some 1.0-litre EcoBoost examples suffered a water leak from the timing cover, and some versions suffered a failure of the child lock system, which was less than ideal in a family vehicle.

In addition, cars fitted with the keyless entry system were known to suffer the odd failure.

However, it’s easy to solve common problems for the C-Max Mk2 with the Haynes C-Max 2011-2019 AutoFix.

Does the C-Max have door-sealing problems?

In short, yes, some versions of the C-Max Mk2 have door-sealing issues. The cause of the fault is most often a faulty sealing strip, which needs to be removed, straightened and refitted with new adhesive. This is a procedure that a DIY mechanic should be capable of completing without issue.

What's that puddle under your C-Max Mk2 transmission?

Some versions of the C-Max Mk2 have suffered issues with oil leaking from the transmission. The cause of the fault is most often a driveshaft that has been wrongly fitted; this then damages the relevant gearbox seal. Either driveshaft can be the cause, but at least the repair procedure is one that a DIY mechanic will be able to carry out without issue with the help of Haynes Autofix.

Why isn't your C-Max child lock working?

There have been reports of some Mk2 C-Max models suffering failure of the child-locking system. The problem is caused by water getting into the driver’s or passenger’s door, usually through a faulty seal on the door mirror. The solution is to remove the door trim and check which components are affected by water ingress, then dry them out or replace them. Then remove the door mirror and replace the sealant before refitting the mirror.

You can get on top of most C-Max problems using the Haynes C-Max 2011-2019 AutoFix.

Does the C-Max Mk2 have keyless locking problems?

It is not unknown for versions of the C-Max Mk2 with keyless entry to suffer failure of the system. This is because in winter salty water can get into the external front door handles, causing the door lock sensor to fail. The solution is to remove the handle and clean it out, a task that is easily accomplished by following the relevant procedure in the Mk2 C-Max problems using the Haynes C-Max 2011-2019 AutoFix.

Why is your Ford C-Max in limp-home mode?

Any fault is irritating, but a fault that comes and goes seemingly at random is the ultimate in frustration. You can guarantee it’ll make every journey hell on a day-to-day basis, but then it’ll magically sort itself just when you decided to sort it once and for all. It’s like the car is sitting there and looking at you as if to say: “What?” Then the next day the process repeats.

But we’re not fooled, and neither should you be. There is an issue, and it’s most likely with a faulty clutch pedal position sensor on the C-Max Mk2.

If you plug in a fault-code reader and delete all the fault codes, then depress the clutch pedal and a code appears, then that’s the issue.

Thereafter, it’s just a case of investing in a new switch, removing the old one and fitting the new one.

Smooth, glitch-free progress will once again be the order of your day.
