Ford Fiesta Mk6 routine maintenance guide (2002 - 2008)

Ford Fiesta Mk6

Modern cars such as the Ford Fiesta Mk6 need much less maintenance than the vehicles of 25 years ago, but they still have needs. You no longer have to do a service every 6 months, or change the oil every 3 months, but regular fluid changes are still essential to your vehicle’s longevity.

What follows is our quick reference guide to many of the recommended routine maintenance tasks for the 2002 to 2008 Ford Fiesta Mk6 (both petrol and diesel engines), most of which you can do yourself at home. If you need more guidance or step-by-step instructions, check out our online manual or get our traditional printed manual.

Mk6 Fiesta maintenance schedule

The maintenance intervals in this manual are provided with the assumption that you, not the dealer, will be carrying out the work. These are the minimum intervals recommended by us for vehicles driven daily.

If you wish to keep your vehicle in peak condition at all times, you may wish to perform some of these procedures more often. We encourage frequent maintenance, since it enhances the efficiency, performance and resale value of your vehicle.

If the vehicle is driven in dusty areas, used to tow a trailer, or driven frequently at slow speeds (idling in traffic) or on short journeys, more frequent maintenance intervals are recommended.

Ford Fiesta Mk6 service intervals

Mk6 Fiesta petrol engines

Every 250 miles

  • Check the engine oil level
  • Check the coolant level
  • Check the screenwash fluid level
  • Check the brake/clutch fluid level
  • Check the power steering fluid level
  • Check the tyres and tyre pressures
  • Check the condition of the battery
  • Check the condition of the wiper blades

Every 6000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first

  • Renew the engine oil and filter

Note: Officially, the engine oil and filter should be changed every 12 500 miles or 12 months. However, oil and filter changes are good for the engine, and we recommend that the oil and filter are renewed more frequently, especially if the car is used on a lot of short journeys.

Every 12,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first

  • Renew the pollen filter, where applicable
  • Check all components, pipes and hoses for fluid leaks
  • Check the condition and tension of the auxiliary drivebelt(s)
  • Check and if necessary adjust the handbrake
  • Check the condition and operation of the seat belts
  • Lubricate all hinges and locks
  • Check the front brake pads and discs for wear
  • Check the rear brake shoes and drums for wear
  • Check the steering and suspension components for condition and security
  • Check the condition of the driveshaft gaiters
  • Check the roadwheel nuts are tightened to the specified torque
  • Carry out a road test

Every 37,500 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first

  • Renew the spark plugs
  • Renew the air filter
  • Check the transmission oil level
  • Check the braking system rubber hoses

Every 50,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first

  • Renew the timing belt – except 1.3 litre engine

Note: Although the normal interval for timing belt renewal on the Mk6 Fiesta is 100 000 miles or 10 years, it is strongly recommended that the interval suggested above is observed, especially on cars which are subjected to intensive use, ie, mainly short journeys or a lot of stop-start driving. The actual belt renewal interval is very much up to the individual owner, but bear in mind that severe engine damage will result if the belt breaks.

Every 75,000 miles

  • Renew the fuel filter

Every 100,000 miles or 8 years, whichever comes first

  • Adjust the valve clearances – except 1.3-litre engine

Every 100,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first

  • Renew the auxiliary drivebelt

Every 2 years, regardless of mileage

  • Renew the brake fluid

Every 4 years, regardless of mileage

  • Renew the coolant and check the condition of the expansion tank pressure cap

Note: If purple Super Plus antifreeze was in the system from new, the coolant need only be changed every 10 years. If there is any doubt as to the type or quality of the antifreeze which has been used, we recommend this shorter interval be observed.

Mk6 Fiesta diesel engines

Every 250 miles

  • Check the engine oil level
